Image description

Letting the eagle scream a bit. "Hindenburgstrasse" didn't seem to be an appropriate street sign in a town just captured by Americans so the victory flushed doughboys held an informal christening party and nailed up the hastily painted sign seen in the picture. Take September 13 at Vigneulles, where the juncture of the 1st and 26th Divisions spelled the successful pinching out of the salient of St Mihiel. Illustration for US Official Pictures of the World War, showing America's Participation, selected from the official files of the War Department by William E Moore and James C Russell (Pictoria Bureau, 1920). Gravure printed.
