Receiving his reward. General Pershing (standing at reading desk) receiving the thanks of Congress at joint session and replying to same, September 17, 1919. On September 4 he had been made "General of the Armies of the United States." The Congressional resolution of thanks was as follows: "The thanks of the American people and the Congress of the United States are due, and are hereby tendered to General John J Pershing for his highly distinguished services as commander-in-chief of the American expeditionary forces in Europe and to the officers and men under his command for their unwavering duty and valor throughout the war."
