Retreat. Parris Island Recruit Depot. If Waterloo was won on the playing fields of England, Belleau Wood, Soissons, Thiaucourt, Blanc Mont and the east bank of the Meuse, were won on the drill grounds of Parris Island, Mare Island and Quantico. "The ultimate purpose of all military training is the battle. This purpose should always be kept uppermost in mind and all efforts should be directed to this end." Nowhere was energy more intensely devoted to vitalizing this maxim than at the Marine training camps.
