Image description

The Cliff Dwellers. These are dugouts near Flirey that were occupied by the 89th Division before it jumped off in the battle of Saint Mihiel. Every hillside in the salient was filled with similar underground habitations. Some were pretentious, built of concrete with bungalow effects. German officers' quarters sometimes contained bathrooms and had formal flower gardens in front. Illustration for US Official Pictures of the World War, showing America's Participation, selected from the official files of the War Department by William E Moore and James C Russell (Pictoria Bureau, 1920). Gravure printed.
