Image description

Campaign for Canada. This illustration portays the rivalry between two generals, James Wolfe (British) and Louis Montcalm (French). The bottom left insert shows Montcalm in discussions with native Indians. The adjacent insert shows Wolfe being appointed by the British Prime Minister, William Pitt. The right hand side of the main illustration shows Wolfe's men scaling the cliffs to attack Quebec. The plan worked and on 13 September 1759, Montcalm was forced to give battle on the Plains of Abraham. His 15,000 troops were no match for the well-trained British forces, who won the battle within an hour. Montcalm died in the fighting, and so did Wolfe (see insert), whose last words to the men who had trusted and respected him were: 'Now God be praised, I will die in peace.' Original artwork.
