The Summer, 1638 (oil on canvas)

El Verano inscription: "IUNIO IULIO I AGOSTO" (June, July and August). It belongs to the series of "The Four Seasons", the most recognized work of Barrera. In the scene, a young villager carries a sheaf of wheat on his shoulders. On the right are food from the summer season: hares, dead birds, a duck or goose, chickens, trout, cold cuts, ham, pies, cabbage, eggplant, apples, plums, figs, honey, cherries, pumpkins. At the bottom of the representation appears a landscape where several farmers are engaged in the harvest of wheat and in the distance, a river with people bathing.
