The church was built at the request of Napoleon III, in memory of Eugène de Beauharnais, his uncle. The plans were entrusted to Lusson, then taken over by Boileau (1837-1914). For the first time, the architect used an entirely metallic structure in a church: hollow cast iron for the columns, iron for the ribbed arches.
