Image description

Tintern Abbey, Monmouthshire, Wales. Exterior view of the west front, south side of the nave and south transept of the church of Tintern Abbey. The church has a cruciform plan and remains mostly instant, keeping the height of the church walls and much of the window traceries. The west front is in the foreground, and all three stanges of the front are nearly intact. At the bottom is a set of twin doors with trefoil arches, and a nine-light window above them, which takes up the whoile of the second stage. The window has most, if not all of its tracery intact. Above this is a smaller window. To the right is the south side of the nave, the lower section of which still has a roof. In the background is the south transept, a two storeyed section with much of the tracery in all of the windows intact. In the distance is a small triangle of stone, notably the top of the east window showing over the walls. The abbey was founded by the Cistercian Order in 1131.
