The sentinels, or guards, of the forest are the huge oaks in the forefront of the picture. The grandeur of the natural world was a popular theme at this time. Artists were also interested in painting the dampness and breeziness of the autumn countryside (rather than just sunny summer days). The wide expanse of sky and broad brushwork are characteristic of this period. Alfred de Bréanski was a well respected London landscape painter.
