Light dragoon shako, 1847-57, worn by Major Thomas Everard Hutton, 4th (Queen's Own) Light Dragoons, at Balaklava, 1854. The light dragoon shako was introduced in 1846. Although more cylindrical in shape than its bell-topped predecessor, it retained the lace band round the top and the Maltese Cross plate. During the Crimean War (1854-1856) foul weather covers were usually worn to protect it.
