In this panoramic view of Haltwhistle, the new railway bridge is almost lost among the rolling hills, becoming part of the landscape. This is one of the preparatory drawings for a set of twenty-four engravings Carmichael published as 'Views of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway' in 1838 and 1839. The pencil drawing has been done on the spot, and would be later worked up into a detailed but tiny watercolour, from which the engravers would work;
