Canadian war veterans (front row L-R) Sergeant Jacques Cinq-Mars, Ted Reynolds, Ron Beal, D'Arcy Bryson, Lieutenant Colonel David Lloyd Hart, and an unidentified former U.S. Army Ranger salute August 18, 2002 during a remembrance ceremony under the western cliffs of Dieppe, from where German forces had poured fire onto their units 60 years ago. Canadian forces, supported by British commandos and American Rangers, launched a raid August 19, 1942 on the German-occupied French coast around Dieppe at a cost of 913 men. Of the 4,963 Canadians who embarked for the operation only 2,210 returned to England, and many of these were wounded.
