Image description

Wiener Barock-Architektur. Translation: Viennese Baroque Architecture. The southern German baroque architecture gave the imperial residence Vienna a decisive character. In order to make amends for the devastation caused by the Turkish wars, emperors and nobility competed in magnificent buildings. Castles, city palaces, etc. perfectly expressed the mixture of noble serenity and monumentality typical of the Viennese Baroque. Illustration for Deutsche Kulturbilder, 1400-1900 (Cigaretten-Bilderdienst Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, 1934).
