Pieter Claesz (Burg-Steinfurt 1597 – Haarlem 1660). Oil painting on panel, Still Life of Food, a Jug and Glasses on a Table by Pieter Claesz (Burg-Steinfurt 1597 – Haarlem 1660), signed with monogram A/PCH and dated 1640. A still life with a crab and a metal coffee-pot on a table covered with a white cloth. This is an important and finely preserved painting by one of the major painters of such still lifes active in Haarlem at the high point of the Golden Age of Dutch painting. It was acquired for the Nostell collection before 1821, probably by Charles Winn, appearing in a bill for repairs to paintings of that year. It was one of only two outstanding Dutch still-life paintings in the collection, the other, by De Heem, having been sold in recent years. It was displayed in the Billiard Room in 1915.
