A security officer guards the site of the first national congress of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai November 4, 2002. The Chinese Communist Party was formed in 1921 in Shanghai and held its first congress there. The communists eradicated the slums, rehabilitated hundreds of thousands of opium addicts and eliminated child and slave labour after they captured the city, dubbed 'Whore of the Orient' or 'Paris of the East', and put it to sleep for more than 40 years. Today's Shanghai has reawakened and is evolving at a pace unmatched by any other cities in the world. The Chinese Communist Party will hold its 16th congress on November 8 to choose a new generation of leaders to replace President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji who were both promoted from Shanghai.
