A ship passes through the locks of the Panama Canal and into the Pacific Ocean, Mayo 1. On the eve of Panama's presidential election, candidates Martin Torrijos and Mireya Moscoso are in a dead heat for the May 2 vote. The candidates, running in the second elections since the 1989 invasion, have imbued their campaigns with assurances they will keep the canal free of corruption.
