Image description

A sovereign's escort of Life Guards. It is only on such occasions as the Opening of Parliament by HM the King that royal pageantry in its full glory can be seen. At such times His Majesty is attended in the procession by a Sovereign's Escort of Life Guards or Royal Horse Guards, consisting of seven officers and over a hundred other ranks. This custom of providing such a large and magnificent escort can be traced to the time of the Restoration, when the utility of the Life Guards was of more importance than their pageantry. In those restless days the Life Guards formed an escort for Charles II wherever he went, so that in the course of time this procedure became a custom which has continued until the present day. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
