Image description

Saluting the spot where Nelson fell, HMS "Victory." As befits the flagship of England's most famous admiral, Nelson's Victory is an object of pilgrimage to visitors from all parts of the Empire. Trafalgar Day is naturally observed with especial pride on board the vessel, now preserved in Portsmouth Dockyard. Nelson's historic signal is hoisted, and a laurel wreath is laid on the spot where he fell, fatally wounded, at the Battle of Trafalgar. It is customary for all naval visitors, whether British or foreign, to pay their respects to the memory of Lord Nelson by saluting this spot, and our picture shows officers and ratings observing this tradition. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
