The gun tampions of HMS "Queen Elizabeth" (colour photo)
The gun tampions of HMS "Queen Elizabeth." A tampion was originally any plug for sealing an aperture, but the word is now chiefly used to describe a bung placed in the muzzle of a gun to protect it from sea-water, rain, etc. Tampions have been used in the Navy for this purpose since about the fifteenth century, and in 1627 a Captain Smith wrote that "A Tomkin (as it was then called) is a round peece of Wood put into the Peeces mouth and covered with Tallow." It is customary for the modern tampion to be inscribed with the ship's badge. The guns and fo'c's'le of HMS Queen Elizabeth are illustrated, with (inset) the ship's badge. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
