The seaman's uniform. Until 1857 seamen of the Royal Navy had largely pleased themselves with regard to their apparel, but in that year an official uniform, including the black kerchief and three rows of white braid on the collar, was prescribed. Tradition has it that the kerchief was originally worn as mourning for Nelson and that the three rows of braid commemorate his three principal victories, but this is merely a popular story without any sound foundation. The black kerchief was primarily worn around the forehead or neck as a "sweat rag," and as such had been in use long before Trafalgar. The rows of white braid had not been known in the Navy before 1857, when they were introduced without any apparent reason. Illustration for one of a set of 50 cigarette cards on the subject of Interesting Customs and Traditions of the Navy, Army and Airforce issued by Lambert & Butler in 1939.
