Alexander at Persepolis. In the course of his stay at Persepolis Alexander began to give indications that his character was deteriorating under the influence of success. Heated with wine after a magnificent banquet, he gave assent to a proposal of one of his companions, legend says his mistress Thais, that a bonfire should be made of the ancient palace of the Persian kings. He soon regretted this barbarous act, but most of the buildings were destroyed before the flames could be extinguished. Illustration for Hutchinson's History of the Nations (Hutchinson, c.1920).
