God Save the King, c.1810 (coloured engraving)

A patriotic print celebrating King George III's golden jubilee. Britannia protects the British countryside, holding a staff topped with a liberty bonnet. The lion sits peacefully before the castle and the cottage. On the left British ships bring home the empire's wealth, as black slaves rejoice at the ending of the British slave trade. The nationwide public celebrations of the King's 50 year reign in 1810 were the first of their kind. George III had become a beloved figure and a patriotic symbol during the wars with France. 30,000 people travelled to Windsor to attend his funeral when he died in 1812.
