Clodion is considered the greatest master of lyrical small-scale sculpture active in France in the later 18th century, successfully transitioning through the decline of the Rococo, the rise of Romanticism, and the upheavals of the Revolution. He is known for his statuettes and terracotta figures and groups, often of lighthearted classical subjects. After the Revolution he changed his style to suit the prevalent Neoclassical taste.
