Camp de concentration Auschwitz (b/w photo)

The inscription of the famous gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp which reads 'Arbeit macht frei' (lit. Work brings freedom) shows a peculiarity on the letter 'B' in Oswiecim, Poland, 11 December 2014. The bottom curve of the letter is smaller than the top curve. Art locksmith Jan Liewacz was interned in Auschwitz in June 1940 and manufactured railings, bars and chandeliers for the camp. He also worked on the camp's gate and later on stated that the 'upside down B' was a willful action of protest. Liwacz survived several days in solitary confinement at Bunker 11 before he was transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp where he was liberated on 06 May 1945. Thieves tried to steel the gate in 2009. They were caught and the gate was restored.
