Image description

From a stereoscopic plate inscribed "It was cut upwards of 3200 years ago, in the reign of Rameses II, of whom the colossi on the facade are supposed to be portraits. These magnificent statues are 65 feet high, but only one of them is fully exposed to view, much of the temple being now buried in desert sand. It was excavated to a depth of 200 feet, and the interior is richly sculptured. It was unknown to Europeans forty years ago, and was first entered by Belzoni." The temple was rediscovered in 1813, dating this photograph to 1853 or later.
