On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "Old shop opposite Crown Inn in Durie Lane. Antique type of many paned shop window, like Matt Cain's, 4 New Bond St. - that, convex. This window as seen from Duke Lane is deeply concave now. Have had two later attempts for a better picture, but both proved worse than this. Very narrow lane & very high buildings - May 26/33 saw this place being painted (or coloured) light stone colour - so shall try for a better picture again. Got it - OK & PC done (but not this)."
