Rear of Durie House, Douglas, Isle of Man, 1932-34 (b/w photo)

On the back of this photograph John James Frowde writes, "The rear of Durie House, giving the impression of its having seen much earlier days than the view of the front would suggest. The tiny slates (like those on the Brown Bobby in Peel Road still), the many cement patches on the roof, welding the ancient slates into a concrete mass. Note the quaintness of the outlet, and the extent, rearward, of the building compared with its frontal aspect. It was the home of a merchant prince of his period. As he had no prophetic vision of the domestic amenities of these days, it is comforting to reflect that he never missed them."
