Image description

Lady Frances Cavendish, Lady Maynard (1595-1613) Inscribed top left, in an early hand: The Right Honble Lady Francis Cavendish /Only Daughter to Wm Earl of Devonshire. She /was the First Wife of Wm. Lord Maynard by / Whom he had one Daughter who Died young. A three-quarter-length portrait, turned to the left, gazing at spectator, seated in a crimson-covered armchair, wearing a silver-white dress embroidered with flowers, high transparent white collar, with pearl rosette ornaments in her hair and on her décolleté, and drop pearl earrings. Grey (once pale red ?) drapery background. She wears the same watch-case (?) at her waist as the sitter (putatively, her mother) in HHE.P.13 and a six-armed diamond and pearl pendant that appears to be a simplified version of that worn by the same sitter. The sitter was the daughter of William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire (1551-1626) and his first wife, Anne Keighley; she married before 12 July 1608, William Maynard, who was created Lord Maynard in 1628.
