Profilhabel; The Cupid Plane The Cupid’s-bow profile of the cutter is echoed in the decoration of the plane’s escapement, wedge and mortise and wittily carries through into the low-relief carving of a Cupid against a punched ground on the side of the stock. Planes of this type are often thought to be apprentice pieces and examples with wooden dummy irons are known. The present plane, however, does have a real iron and there are clear signs on the sole that the plane has been used. The way the top of the wedge and the iron have been cut back for clearance in a confined space provides further evidence. 50 degree pitch
