Yawalapiti indian chief Aritana inside his village in the Alto Xingu area, in the lower Amazon, on May 13, 2002. The Yawalipiti are one of 17 tribes living inside the Xingu Indigenous Park, a reserve created in 1961 roughly the size of Belgium, to protect the indians. Anointed chief in 1986, Aritana, who has two wives and eight children, speaks nine different indigenous languages in addition to Portuguese and runs the tribe of 180; up from just 12 people some 50 years ago. His chief's role has been extended to all the tribes of the Xingu, after tribal chiefs unanimously agreed to appoint him their combined head.
