Illustration of grave goods from the tomb of Hubert Walter, Archbishop of Canterbury. The tomb was opened in 1890. Walter was the chief minster of Richard I, with whom he went on Crusade. He died on 13 July 1205. In 1881, Scott Robertson, one of the Cathedral Canons, suggested that a tomb in Trinity Chapel, previously thought to be that of an earlier Archbishop, may be that of Hubert Walter. To establish who had been buried there, the tomb was opened in 1890. An exceptionally fine collection of over 40 textiles were found to have been worn by the Archbishop, and his cedar-wood crozier, ring, silver gilt chalice and paten were also found. William Griggs, the pioneer of colour photo-lithography, was employed to print reproductions.
