Sheikh Abdel Karim Obeid (L) and Mustapha Dirani (R) of the Amal movement, appear in the Tel Aviv District Court May 29 for the first time in an open session to decide whether the men should be released. Dirani was abducted by Israel in 1994 and Obeid in 1989. Israeli authorities said at the time that the two men, held as bargaining chips for [Ron] Arad, an Israeli airman shot down over Lebanon in 1986, pose a danger to national security. Lawyers for Dirani and Obeid are seeking their release, insisting they would pose no threat to state security.
