Image description

A group of women and children walk through part of the Amalacachico squatter settlement in this photo taken October 9, 2002. Dozens of homes at one end of Amalacachico were destroyed by riot police during an eviction early in October. Amalacachico was built illegally inside a wetlands reserve in the Xochimilco district of Mexico's teeming capital. For decades squatters have been defacto city planners in this metropolitan area of 18 million people, putting up homes that are followed by formal development of roads, power lines and sewers. But now some of the city's poor are trapped in a new confrontation between housing rights and environmental preservation. Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has vowed to tear down squats built in the city's precious few green areas. October 9, 2002.
