Dame Janet Smith, head of the public inquiry into the case of British serial killer Harold Shipman, closes her eyes as she delivers her findings at Manchester Town Hall, July 19, 2002. Shipman was confirmed on Friday as one of the world's worst serial killers when an official inquiry ruled he had killed at least 215 of his patients. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2000 for the murder of 15 of his mainly elderly patients with lethal heroin injections, however a public inquiry into the deaths of 500 of his patients over a 23-year period, ruled on Friday that 215 deaths were "highly suspicious" and that he may also have killed another 45 during his murderous spree.
