Image description

Whole artwork view. White headline on a black background, over a combination of two views of Messina drawn around 1711-1714 by great late-Baroque architect Filippo Juvarra; both the drawings, belonging to the Turin National University Library, represent sights of the same harbor bay, in different times, and below the second one is written View of the Harbor of Messina at the time of the Roman Republic (Veduta del Porto di Messina il tempo della Repubblica Romana); the upper sketch depicts the urban layout set up by Juvarra, comprising the extension of the Palazzata (1622-1624 semicircular building by Simone Gullì with three orders, gates and towers) up to the Royal Citadel, the five bastions fort built by Carlos de Grunenbergh (1680-1686) on which Juvarra on which proposed to place the lighthouse; in the second drawing, on the contrary, Juvarra shows a reconstruction of the sickle shaped harbor area during the Roman times, even if the feature of the city walls, the ships sailing and docking and buildings seem rather medieval than antique.
