Female inmates at Bangkok's Central Womens' Correctional Facility sit behind bars in their prison uniforms with their infants August 6, 2002. Babies born at the jail are housed there in a special childrens ward until they reach one year of age, then are generally relocated to special homes. A two-year-old program initiated by Thailand's state correctional department also allows young children, most of whom live in special homes rather than with relatives, to spend one hour per week with their mothers in the prison which currently houses over 6,400 inmates. Over 80 per cent of inmates are serving sentences on drug-related charges, with a smaller percentage imprisoned on other charges including theft and murder.
