The Winter War 1939-40 (b/w photo)

The Winter War. A military conflict between the Soviet union and Finland. It began with a Soviet invasion on november 1939 when Soviet infantery crossed the border on the Karelian Isthmus. About 9500 Swedish volunteer soldiers participated in the war. Here the Karelian Isthmus Finland. Finnish soldiers at the village Summa close to the frontline at the Mannerheim line are digging trenches and reinforces the defence line. It was here the first Soviet attempt to invade happened in December 1939. The Finns repelled the Soviet main troops. The second Soviet attack on Summa was in February 1940.
