Federal Reserve policy-makers opted on August 12, 2003 to keep U.S. interest rates at 45-year lows but again warned about the risks of falling prices and said rates could stay low for "a considerable period." The central bank's policysetting Federal Open Market Committee left the bellwether federal funds rate at 1 percent, a 1958 low hit after the Fed cut rates 13 times since early 2001 to foster a more vigorous expansion.
