SOUTH KOREAN WOMAN SELLS GOLD IN SEOUL, 1998-01-05 (photo)

Lee Eun-sun, a South Korean employee of the Housing and Commercial Bank, holds a handful of gold rings her young son received on his first birthday (a traditional gift in Korea) as she waits in line to sell them to the bank in Seoul January 5. The bank and South Korea's Daewoo Corp launched a campaign on Monday to collect gold from people who want to help tackle the country's financial troubles. Customers, employees and concerned citizens may bring in their gold jewellery which will eventually be melted into gold bars, exported abroad, and sold for desperately needed foreign currency.
