A Jat Sowar of the 6th Cavalry mounted, galloping, with slung lance, 1908 circa. Watercolour drawing by Alfred Crowdy Lovett (1862-1919), 1908 circa. The Jats come from what is now northern, western and central India and Pakistan. They are considered to be the merged descendants of the original Indo-Aryans invaders of India. They follow the Moslem, Sikh and Hindu faiths and have a long history of soldering. The British soon recruited them into the Indian Army, declaring them to be one of India’s so called ‘Martial Races’.
