Switzerland Guido Literature Calgari, 1950 (b/w photo)

Portrait of Guido Calgari (1905 - 1969), ETH professor and writer from Ticino, taken in April 1950. Calgari was the author of several books, among which “The Four Literatures of Switzerland” is probably his best known work. He also wrote a number of Italian school books and received several awards from the Schiller Foundation. Calgari, who died at the age of 69, had belonged to numerous cultural organizations and was president of the New Helvetic Society in 1941. From 1952-1969 he was also professor for Italian language and literature at the ETH Zurich.
