Image description

A peasant carries a vicuna during a "chaccu", the country's largest vicuna round-up of the year, June 24, 1300 feet above sea level at the windswept Pampa Galera national reserve park in southern Peru. The vicuna was one of around 2,000 of the wild South American camelid rounded up for shearing. Around 1500 villagers followed ancient Inca tadition to form a human chain that gradually closed in on the vicunas herding them into pens. [The vicuna, distance cousin to the camel and brother to the llama, has such fine hair that an overcoat made from its golden-brown fleece can cost up to US5,000].
