Sir Terence Rattigan (1911-1977) One of England's most popular and powerful 20th-century dramatists. His plays, generally set in an upper-middle-class background, include French Without Tears (1936), The Winslow Boy (1946), The Browning Version (1948), The Deep Blue Sea (1952) and Separate Tables (1954). Several of his plays have been made into classic films. He went out of fashion with the arrival of 'kitchen sink' drama in the 1960s, but came back into vogue in the early 21st century.
