Somerset Maugham ( 1874 – 1965) British novelist, short story writer and playwright. He was among the most popular writers of his era and reputedly the highest paid author during the 1930s. A qualified doctor, many of the depictions of life in his work are dawn from his experiences as a medical student. His best known novel is the thinly disguised autobiography, Of Human Bondage (1915). Among other successful novels are The Moon and Sixpence (1919), Cakes and Ale (1930) and The Razor's Edge (1944). Many of his novels had been made into films, some more than once. In 1908 he had four plays running simultaneously in London. He was made a Companion of Honour in 1954.
