Workers race ostriches near the small Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, July 13. The avian equivalent of the donkey derby is the star turn for tourists on the Highgate Ostrich farm, the oldest farm in the area which is itself the centre of the world's ostrich industry. The industry has gone from boom at the turn of the century to bust in the 1970's and is now hoping for a millennium bonus as demand for ostrich plumage blossoms ahead of the planned mega parties.
