Former St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Ozzie Smith holds a copy of the book "The Wizard of Oz" during his speech at his induction ceremony into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, July 28, 2002. Smith, nicknamed "the wizard" for revolutionizing defensive play with his acrobatic fielding style, was a 14 time All-star who played 19 season in the major leagues with the San Diego Padres (1978-81) and St. Louis Cardinals (1982-96). He was inducted on his first year of eligibility, earned 13 Gold Gloves, holds six major league fielding records among shortstops, had 2,460 hits, 580 stolen bases and played in three world series.
