Hunger in Rome. In an article describing the drama of thin children with sunken cheeks and girls covered in rags, the Roman correspondent for the Swiss newspaper Neue Zurcher Zeitung reports the following statement: of the director of a school he visited, I once walked into a shop and could buy a big bread for four pounds; today I must say, I went into a shop, I bought half a bread for four hundred lire and the bread was hard and moldy.
