Image description

The bandstand in the park dates to 1912, and is octagonal with eight cast iron piers with corinthian capitals supporting a sloping roof. There is a plaque dated 1912 commemmorating Henry Bell who gifted the bandstand. In the background, mostly obscured by the bandstand and park, is Hexham Abbey, a former Augustinian Priory which was originally founded c673 by St Wilfrid. The choir, transepts and tower date to c1180, and the nave was rebuilt in 1908 by Temple Moor after a fire damaged it in 1296. The crossing tower has an embattled parapet with round clock faces underneath it on all sides, and pairs of belfry openings within an arcade. The tower also has a low pyramidal roof, topped with weathervane.
