Barnard Castle was first established post c1095 by Guy de Baliol, and the stone castle was built in the 12th century. The castle consists of four wards: the Inner Ward is in the north-west corner, where the keep is situated, the Middle Ward is to the south, the Town Ward east of both and the Outer Ward extends south. The curtain wall survives on the north side, with varying heights on the other fronts. On the west side of the river bank is a partial view of Ullathorne Mill, built to manufacture textiles and shoe-maker's threads. It was demolished c1975.
