Image description

PICTURE TAKEN 8DEC96 - A man anchors his boat in the bay of Puno on Lake Titicaca, located near the border between Peru and Bolivia. The green algae on the surface of the water, called Lema Gibba, is a product of the contamination of the lake by the sewers of the Andean city of Puno. Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori and Bolivian President Hugo Banzer signed agreements December 14 to reduce the contamination in the highest navigable lake in the world. Banzer arrived on December 13 in Lima as part of a two-day official visit to Peru. MB/LJM/SB
